My first day in the Victoria School Chinese Orchestra (Please mark)
To many people, joining a CCA, or Co-Curricular Activity, is just like learning a new subject in school. Perhaps some students may already have attended that particular CCA in their previous primary school, making the student an experienced person in that CCA. For me, I have been in a Chinese Orchestra for nearly six years and counting. this makes me an experienced player, which brings me back to the I arrived at Victoria School for the second time in my life, more than one year ago .......
I was nervous. This was my second time coming to this new school, ahead of all the other students in my cohort, apart from my interview with the three principals, which is yet another story to be told...... Anyway, my parents had drove off the moment they had dropped me off at the porch. I eyed a boy holding a chinese instrument! He had a freckled face and wore spectacles. He was talking to a lady who had short black hair and also wore spectacles too. I heard an oboe sound and surveyed the spiral staircase on my left. When I turned back to the freckled boy, he was already walking in my direction. I took a deep breathe and thought to myself, alright, I'll just ask him where is the Chinese Orchestra room is. Before I could utter a word, he called out to me :" Are you the new Chinese Orchestra player?" Cripes! I thought, how did he know? Soon, however, it all became clear. He introduced himself as Wei Liang and informed a shocked me that he was the vice-chairman of the Victoria School Chinese Orchestra. He then brought me to the canteen to find the chairman, who was at the canteen having lunch.
When I reached the canteen, I looked around for the chairman. When Wei Liang brought me to the table which the chairman was supposed to be, I stared blankly at the occupants, as a dozen pair of eyes stared back at me. Wei Liang ran to a tall, freckled boy and whispered something into his ear. The tall boy looked at me for a short while before a broad grin stretched across his face. He told me that his name was Ser Yang, chairman of the Victoria School Chinese Orchestra. Wei Liang then brought me to the Chinese Orchestra room. It was a big room and was filled with many students. Feeling a bit awkward, I sat at a corner, clutching my bag. Soon, Ser Yang came up to the Chinese Orchestra room and told everybody to gather in front of the board. He told me to stand in front of everybody. As Ser Yang introduced me, I surveyed the crowd. After the introductions were finished, everyone was to move to various groups according to their instruments. I followed a big, tall boy to a classroom on the fifth floor. I soon found out that his name was Bryan. Firstly, everybody was to tune their instruments. I, having had some experience in my previous school, tune my erhu at a very fast speed. Many of the other players stared at me with surprise etched on their faces. After tuning the instruments, it was time to practice our pieces. I was to try and play a totally alien score own my own. I found it, however easy to sight-read.
The rest of the afternoon was devoted to playing the piece and at 5.30p.m. , it was time to report back to the Chinese Orchestra room. After debriefing the members of the Chinese Orchestra, I was told the day of the next practice. As I left the Chinese Orchestra room that day, I felt that my first day at the Victoria School Chinese Orchestra was an enjoyable one.
